Stauning Kaos is lightly smoked, spicy and sweet whisky with complexity and structure. On the nose, there's notes of cereals, chocolate, oak, caramel, cinnamon and bonfire. It has flavours of smoked chocolate with a palate of nougat, caramel, liquorice, sweet apple and oak. The long smokey finish lingers with touches of vanilla, orange, tobacco, dried red fruit and more oak.
Stauning Kaos takes its name from the first social-democratic Prime Minister of Denmark, Thorvald Stauning (1873-1943). He is considered to be the founder of the modern welfare state. In his re-election campaign of 1935, he used the slogan "Stauning or Chaos" (translated from "Stauning eller Kaos" in Danish). Well, he won the election! This whisky brings together Stauning and KAOS by blending the best rye and single malt whiskies in a curious, yet fascinating marriage.
It's made using locally harvested Danish barley and rye. It's floor-malted at the distillery. It's matured in heavy charred Virgin American Oak barrels and first fill, Makers Mark casks. The spirit is double-distilled in small, open-fired pot stills. It's unfiltered and not chill-filtered, so it's natural that some residue may appear. It's 100% hand crafted at the distillery using nothing other than local ingredients.
