Gin is a drink with a sometimes dubious reputation and indeed many know it by the nickname "Mother's Ruin". Deriving from the much older Dutch drink Genever, it became popularised during the reign of William of Orange in what became known as the "Gin Craze" that so firmly marred the drink's reputation in history. Modern Gin is however a world away from the dangerous home distillates of the Gin Craze, and is instead rather a wonderfully aromatic spirit infused with botanicals in a variety of styles. A crucial component of many cocktails around the world and the core of the much-loved Gin and Tonic, Gin sees a place on the shelves of every bar of repute.
