The recipe for a Manhattan was first published in the bartenders' guides from the early 1880's. It basically requires the addition of vermouth to a whisky cocktail. Whilst the origins of this cocktail are not totally clear, some have said that it was first created in 1874 at the Manhattan Club, New York for Lady Randolph Churchill, who held a banquet there in honour of the politician Samual J. Tilden. Today, the accepted recipe for this pre-dinner drink requires a sweet vermouth. There are also other versions such as the Dry Manhattan and the Perfect Manhattan which requires a mix of dry and sweet vermouth.
