Daiquiri
Ingredients:
Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim of the glass.
The original daiquiri was a combination of rum, lime and sugar created by Jennings Cox, an american mining engineer working in Cuba. He worked for Pennsylvania Steel Company and Cuba's Spanish-American Iron Company. In the long, hot summer of 1896 his supplies of gin ran out and he was expecting some VIPs for drinks. The only liquor available was rum and he did not want to serve it straight, so he mixed in fresh lime juice and granulated sugar. The drink was named Daiquiri, a town near Santiago. Its fame spread to America in 1909 when Admiral Lucius Johnson o the US Navy brought the recipe back to the United States and Washington's Army and Navy Club. There is a brass plaque dedicated to Cox in it Daiquiri lounge.
