Fernet Branca is a bitter herbal liqueur invented by Bernardino Branca in Milan, Italy in 1845. Branca, a self-taught apothecary created the recipe, sharing credit with a fictional Dr. Fernet, perhaps to validate early claims of the drink's health-giving properties.
Fernet Branca is hugely popular in Italy, typically used as a digestif, but it has seen a cult following internationally with the growing interest in cocktails. It is created from a top secret blend of 27 herbs and other ingredients known only to Fernet-Branca president, Niccolo Branca who personally measures them out during production. |
