Ardbeg Distillery (Scottish Gaelic: Taigh-stail Airde Beaga) is a Scotch whisky distillery on the south coast of the isle of Islay. The Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798, but sadly fell foul of the global whisky downturn in the late 1970s leading to production halting. Fortunately, it was bought and reopened by new owners in 1997 and is now one of the fastest growing Islay distilleries.
Ardbeg whiskies are distinctive for using the most heavily peated malts in the industry, with many of their expressions having a phenol content of 55ppm, in some cases much higher. This, combined with the distillery's proximity to the ocean give Ardbeg its unique turfy smoke and seaspray characteristics.
Ardbeg has been named "World Whisky of the Year" 4 times in the past 7 years and called 'as close to perfection as makes no difference' by connoisseurs. It's a whisky with a fantastic reputation. |
